Daniel
J. Losty
Daniel
J. Losty is the son of Irish born Matthew J. Losty and
Catherine Burns.
Daniel's Grandmother, Mrs.
John Losty, formerly Miss. Julia Byrne of Ireland,
immigrated to the United States in 1863.
Daniel was born September 11,
1883 in
Holyoke, Massachusetts. He attended and graduated the
local schools of Holyoke.
Daniel, seen in the
photo below, is sitting on a bicycle in front of the fence. His
mother, and two sisters, Julia and Mary are also seen in the
photo. Catherine is holding her youngest child, William Burns
Losty.
In
April of 1910, Daniel was 27 years old and was partnered with his
father Matthew J. Losty and brother George J. Losty, as the employers
of "Matthew J. Losty & Sons Paper Ruling Shop". Daniel's
sisters and brother, Burns Losty, were also working in the shop.
Note Census Error: The 1910
US Census lists Daniel's age as 24. He was actually 27.
In 1920,
Daniel, now 32, was still a bachelor and remained so all his
life. He was not working when the census
was taken January 20th.
Ten years later, it is
noted in the 1930
US Census, Daniel was employed in a Paper Mill and living with his
father, at 1226 Dwight Street, which had been Daniel's home all his
life except for a brief time spent in Boston, MA. This might explain
why Daniel was unemployed in 1920. Perhaps he had just returned
from Boston.
In 1929, Daniel's mother
passed away leaving him and his father to do for themselves. Daniel's sister,
Julia, and brother-in-law, Michael Shaughnessy, lived
next door to Matthew and Daniel. Julia and Michael did not have
any children, and, most likely, Julia helped them with the cooking and
cleaning.
Daniel's brother,
William Burns Losty, had three daughters, Mary, Claire, &
Irene. Mary, remembers Dan being a loner. Rarely leaving his
room to eat with the rest of the family, he often ate alone in the
kitchen. Occasionally he would eat his meals in his room, when Julia
brought it to him.
Daniel's niece Claire Losty, now Claire Luis,
was so fond of Daniel she named one of her daughters, Dani, who is now
Mrs. Dani Little of California. (no photo)
In 1930, after Daniels'
father passed away, Julia
and Michael moved into Matthew & Catherine's home and share it with Daniel
for 18 years, until his death in the Spring of 1948.

notes:
Claire and I used to talk for hours on the telephone and I wish I
could talk to her now. She was 10 or 11 years younger than I and
her family experiences were at a different time. Most of the
family had passed away she was born.
She had different memories of Uncle Dan than Irene and I had.
Irene told me that she was afraid of him.
