CANADIAN
FRENCH IMMIGRANTS US CENSUS RECORDS AND OTHER DOCUMENTS
The
Dauphinais Family, as well as The Flageole
Family, were Canadian/French
descendents, as was
The Roussel Family.
Many
of the French immigrants from Canada could not speak English. Their names were often misspelled due to the language
barrier between the French speaking immigrants and the English speaking
natives of the United States. In many cases, the household member providing information
to census takers
spoke only French and/or spoke English with a heavy French
accent; the result being: -- their names were commonly
misspelled. We found several variations of their surnames
written in numerous documents. In most cases, the record keepers
recorded their names as they sounded rather than its true spelling and
it other cases census transcribers could not read the census records
and simply transcribed their names incorrectly as noted throughout
these pages. We found not only Paul Dauphinais' name misspelled
but also the surnames of his wife and inlaws.
The Dauphinais Family
name has been recorded as
Dufaney, Dauphinet, Dofinais, Duphensi, as well as the original spelling
pronounced (Du-fin-nay).
The
Flageole Family name
has been recorded as Fajole, Fregeole, Fregeolle, Flageol, Fregol as
well as the original spelling pronounced (Fleg-o-le)
The
Roussel Family name
has been recorded as Rouselle, Rousselle,
Russelle, Rousell,
Russell as well as its original spelling pronoucned (Ru-sell)
Having
said that the following narrative reflects the life of Paul Dauphinais
and the families connected to him.
THE
HISTORY OF PAUL
DAUPHINAIS
Paul Dauphinais was born in 1812
during the month of August
and is the
son of
Jacques Dauphinais
and Josephte Vermette
Based upon Paul
Dauphinais' age, of 66, when he immigrated to the United
States in 1878, we assume he spent the majority of his life in Canada.
His parents, Jacques Dauphinais
and wife Josephte "Vermette" Dauphinais were also born in
Canada.
We
do not have any information
regarding Paul's life
during the years of
1813 through 1852 -
except for the
following:
In the
1880 Holyoke, Massachusetts U.S. Census
we find, living in the home of Paul & Henrietta "Flageole"
Dauphinais, Almira Refrab - listed as Paul's
mother-in-law. This
indicates to the reader Paul was previously married to a Miss.
(unknown) Refrab whom we know nothing about -- nor can we find
anything on her or The Refrab
Family. If you have any knowledge
of The Refrab family, pleasecontact
us
Also
during these years the
social, political, religious and economical conditions in Canada beginning
the month
prior to Paul's birth
on July 13th
1812,
gives the reader insight regarding the living conditions of the
Canadian born French descendents living during that era. The
War of 1812. U.S. Brigadier - General
Hull, sent a
Proclamation to Canada regarding the invading British
forces on July 13th, 1812.

on the 11th day of November.

She was 22 years old.

Like Paul, Henriette

spelling of her name (listed below) in numerous documents.

The Dauphinais
Family & The Rousselle Family 20
year long friendship in Holyoke Massachusetts
Prior
to the Dauphinais family immigrating to the United States in 1878,
their future in-laws, The Rouselle Family, had been in Massachusetts
18 years; and, in 1880 they were living in Hinsdale, Massachusetts.
On June 2,
1880, we find Paul
Dauphinais, age 68, living next door to his daughter, Mrs. Alfred
Rousselle. The Dauphinais family and The Rousselle
families were living side by side in the same 4 story apartment
building in Holyoke, Massachusetts and it
is here we begin to document the 20 year long relationship between
these two families.

Transcribers' Surname Error For purposes of saving space on this page,

In 1880, Olivine Dauphinais'
father-in-law, Francis Rousselle, was employed in a Woolen Mill in Middlefield Massachusetts
where he lived with his wife, two of his children and his grandson,
Francis Russell. Two years later Francis was listed in the
Holyoke City Directory living in the same apartment building, at 576 East Street, in
Holyoke, Massachusetts, where Olivine & his son Alfred Roussel
(sic) were living. Also living in the 4 story apartment
building at 576 East Street was Olivine's father, Paul Duphinet, his
wife, Henriette and son David. Francis Rousselle and his family
lived beside his daughter and in-laws at until 1885.

1883, 1884 Holyoke Massachusetts, City Directory: Note:
Paul and Francis were listed in the City Directories and their names
were misspelled Roussel and Duphinet
In 1885, Francis Rousselle moved to 69 Sargeant
Street and then moved to 56 Hamilton Street
the following year where he remained until 1888.

In 1965, I was born in Holyoke,
Massachusetts and lived at 24 Sargeant Street seen in the adajacent
photo on the left, with my parents, Richard Ellis and Joan Losty.
Also in this home were my brothers, Tom & Jim. - S. Ellis
In 1888, Paul Dauphinais was not employed and listed in the City Directory still living at 576 East Street
with his son David Dauphinais where he remained until 1890.
Name: Paul Dauphinet
Business Address: house 576 East
City: Holyoke
State: MA
Year: 1889
source: Holyoke City Directory
In 1889 Francis Rousselle's son, Nelson Russell moved to Middlefield,
MA. His name was listed as "Russell" in the Holyoke City Directory noting his departure from the City.
In 1890 Paul Dauphinais moved
from 576 East Street where he lived the since 1880 (check
census street name for 1880) To 560 East Street. . David Dauphinais remained in the house at 576 East Street.
In 1893 The Dauphinais family moved to 55 Hamilton St in Holyoke, Massachusetts, which
was the approximate location where Francis Rousselle and his family
live five years earlier. It is very possible Francis and his wife were
still living at 56 Hamiliton Street, but we cannot confirm this due to
lack of records for Francis between 1888 and 1893. The
Dauphinais family remained at 55 Hamilton Street until the death of Paul the following
year in 1894.
In 1894 Paul Dauphinais is listed in the city directory and
then passed away later that year and buried in South Hadley,
Massachusetts. (probably at Notre Dame or Precious Blood Cemetery) Francis Roussell's
wife, Sophriana Virginie St. Amant also passed way in 1894.
In 1895, Paul Dauphinais' wife, Henrietta Dauphinais, was living at
563 South Summer Street and was listed in the Holyoke City Directory as a
widow
where she remained for the following three years. Francis Rousselle's son,
Joseph Roussel was living at 561 South Summer Street , just two doors down from Henrietta
Dauphinais.
Joseph Russell, brother-in-law to Olivine Dauphinais Russell, was surely keeping his eye on
Olivine's mother, Henrietta Dauphinais, since the passing of her husband
the year before. The Rousselle family was not only in-laws to the
Dauphinais, but were also very dear friends, as one can conclude from their relationship over the years.
In 1898, Henrietta Dauphinais moved to 28 Forrest Street in Willimansette, Massachusetts with her two youngest daughters
Graizella also known as Priscella or Grace Dauphinais who was still single in 1898 and Mary Louise Leverault and son-in-Law Adolphe
Leverault. Henriette's daughter, Olivine was living with her husband
Alfred at 576 South Summer Street, in Holyoke. In 1899, Grazella Dauphinais married Alfred Lancour and moved out of the Willimansette home located at 28 Forrest Street.
Henrietta remained in Willimansette until 1910 when she moved to
North Hampton and it is there she passed away in 1916. Henriette
Flageole Dauphinais was laid to rest in St Mary's cemetery in
Northampton, Massachusetts.
